keeping scour safe and awesome!

July 16th, 2008 · 13 Comments · Uncategorized

Thanks to all of you Scour users who are making scour your new search engine, we aim to satisfy all of your search needs for a long time to come!  One way we aim to do this is to ensure the legitimacy of user contributions across our network.  There have already been several users trying to game our system in many ways (some pretty creative) using search scripts, speed commenting and a multitude of other ways to rack up the points.

Although we appreciate the effort,  it doesn’t help the engine or the Scour community, so we have hundreds of measures in place to detect and remove fraudulent activity on our network and will be adding more as certain people get more creative.  One way is by limiting user generated points to 500 a day (not including friends points, there is no cap on that) .  So if you try to game the system, your account will be banned -not recommended.  So chill out, use Scour legitimately, have fun, and get paid!

Ahh, the unending battle to keep out the exploiters. Unfortunately, for every potential legitimate user that’s out there, there seems to be about 10 exploiters out there just waiting to take advantage of the system.

On the plus side, even with most of the search results coming up with no votes or comments, the Scour system is giving me better results than I used to get with the other search engines separately.

I am more and more satisfied with Scour every day!

Well I hit the limit yesterday, I search a lot so it was quite annoying that my points weren’t counted during that period. Oh well not a big deal I checked the leader board and noticed a lot of the 3000 credit people are now removed so I guess they were cheating.

Anyways, I’m a really active searcher so I think I’ll hit this limit quickly. On Google I’d say I make at least 600 searches a day (that includes refining the search). Part of my job involves finding new things which is why I turn to search.

I think the 500 limit is a little too low. It should definitely be increased maybe 1000 or something or maybe that’s too much. But basically it should go according to your trust level - based on the quality of your comments. The more trust level you have, the more points you can earn each day.

Yes this is cool website. But When I search something it doesn’t add to me points.. Any idea why

Yes a individual trust level would be more adequate, my work depends on a lot of searches and if I get 4 points per search I can only make 125 searches per day because the limit is on user generated points, not searches.

I do completely agree with this step. Exploiters should be caught and banned.

But i’d also agree with “Mobile Answers” about the proposal of raising the daily limit. And i wonder, if it is legit to search just to earn points? lol. like can i search random things just for earning points?

    Hi

Some people genuinely do a lot of searches everyday, that too which are repetative and similar in nature, like for eg. finding meanings of words, searching wallpapers, etc.

How do you guys filter these genuine searches out. Also, is a warning given before the ID’s are blocked? Because it may lead to negative publicity if a genuine ID is banned. I myself am a huge Chain searcher, easily exceeding 500 points in a day, for my project, creativity and personal interest.

Also, what if referred friends try to game the system, will we lose the points we got due to them?

it should be set to atleats 1000 points per day. its unfair to those who legitimately using the service.

    Hi all,

Just wanted to address this here, and we also posted a blog entry to assure you that normal users will not be flagged as spam. The spammers we refer to try to create special algorithms to cheat our system. These are the kinds of spam we are weeding out. If you are using the search engine for traditional search, commenting and voting… you’ll be fine and we are very excited to have you join us!

Users who abuse Scour are strange - Scour gave you a chance to receive money in really nice way, and I think it’s stupid to abuse it. We can help each other, so don’t be so selfish.

I agree with that article. Keep up with good and honest work! :)
