Week 3: Answering more of your questions

July 29th, 2008 · 47 Comments · Uncategorized

We continue to receive an overwhelming number of comments…thanks again, everyone! We’ve seen some of the same questions popping up and wanted to jump in and answer them here. Keep ‘em coming!

Can you explain the Scour points calculator? It appears it does not take into account the 500 point daily limit.

We will be adding the 500 point cap to the calculator per your concerns since the calculator was created prior to the 500 point daily limit. Thanks for pointing this out to us.

How do you tell the difference between a “scammer” and a loyal searcher who uses the engine a lot?

We can’t share our proprietary methods to identify someone who is attempting to game the system, unfortunately.  What we can tell you is that if you are caught attempting to game it you will be banned; if you are not attempting to do so, no need to worry.

How do you cashout? I have been trying to contact support@scour.com but it isn’t working.

We have resolved the support@scour.com email address issue…our apologies! Once you have reached the cashout minimum, simply click on “my profile” the click on “cash out” which will instruct you to submit your mailing address and other relevant shipping information.

That’s it for now…check back soon for more.

Looking forward to reaching that cash out limit. We’ve referred a ton of people so far and it’s helping our points. Once we get to cash out and actually receive that visa card it’ll be even easier to refer people.
Who doesn’t like making some $ just for using a different service?
BTW - Will you be adding on other payment options other than the visa giftcard? Maybe a paypal transfer? (Don’t know what’s there yet, 2000 points short before we find out)

  • 2 Smytt // Jul 30, 2008 at 12:36 am

    Hello.

First - I want to apologise if i’ve been using any more privilages as a regular user than the once i’ve been offered, although I’m sure I’m not.

second - I’ve been banned. Why - I don’t know. I’ve just recieved an email telling me that “I’ve been banned due to excessive abuse
of user privileges.” Very cool, because I’ve just reached the minimum cashout pooints and I was the only one to tell the cashout email is not working. Anyway. I’m here for an answer now. No one receives a judgement without being told why, right. So I’m banned I want to know why. I’ve made my point without any cheating methods. I don’t want any 25 dollars. I earn far more than that. But just for my piece - I wanted to know if this was scam. haha and gues what. It smells as it actually is! I won’t get my peace until I get 25 dollars or I make sure everyone knows this is scam. I’ve been banned with no reason. I’ve been telling my cinsere opinion and I’ve been asking why don’t I receive an answer ofr my questions. And still I’m banned without any answers. I won’t beg for an answer. But people will know for themselves once they get 6500 pts. thank you.

thanks for resolving the issues! :D

  • 4 কাপালিক // Jul 30, 2008 at 12:08 pm

I’ve referred lots of people through a Bangla community blogging platform. I’ve reached 4000 points now. All of the bloggers there are waiting anxiously to see if Scour does really pay or not.

If I can just give them the proof, there will be a flood of joining to scour from the blogging platform, since it is the largest platform from my country.

Does any one received any payment from you yet? Why doesn’t anyone answer any comment here?

  • 5 Mobile Answers // Jul 30, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Well I cashed out, waiting for payment. Visa is only available to US people so they’ll have to come out with another way for people elsewhere.

Smytt what was your username? was it smytt - it would be easy to find out if you scammed or not. Did you post bs comments, or use some automated tool? lol

  • 6 Musavvir // Jul 30, 2008 at 6:41 pm

Are you nuts? there are VISA outlets all over the world! VISA cards are accepted all over the world.

And what do you mean by - “Visa is only available to US people so they’ll have to come out with another way for people elsewhere. ” ??

The Scour admin clearly said they would ship the card all over the world, you just have to be a legal resident of that country.

  • 7 Vishwajeet Singh // Jul 30, 2008 at 7:09 pm

This was just the beginning lol!! :)

  • 8 Smytt // Jul 30, 2008 at 7:22 pm

    @Mobile Answers

I’m waiting for your “yay” once you get the money in your hends :)
Automated tool - of course - I’m a programmer, I earn thousands of dollars each month and I’m taking my precious time to write scripts for 25 dollars, of course. Get real.

I searched, I voted, I commented. Those were the rules. I stuck to them and got stuck now. thank you.

  • 9 serialbox // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Here’s a question you can answer. Why are you spamming this service? And why was my last complaint completely deleted from this blog with no acknowledgement.

Any site that has to resort to SPAM is a joke and will end up a scam eventually.

    Here it is again.

    Hey,
Did you hear about Scour? It is the next gen search engine with Google/Yahoo/MSN results and user comments all on one page. Best of all we get paid for using it by earning points with every search, comment and vote. The points are redeemable for Visa gift cards! It’s like earning credit card or airline points just for searching! Hit the link below to join for free and we will both get points!
    http://scour.com/invite/xxxxxx/
    I know you’ll like it!

(user was classic9) not that it matters.

Hey guys, have a look at this promotion post on http://www.lifeiscolourful.com/scour-search-engine-make-money-by-searching-online/

  • 11 Mobile Answers // Jul 31, 2008 at 2:01 pm

    @smytt
Well you’ll have to take that up with them, if you’re actually 4 real then IDK take that up with them, but if you’re lying they’ll know and it’ll be easy to tell.

    @Musavvir
That’s what they told me. They said they can only send the cards if you’re in the US otherwise they’ll send you it paypal. I replied but have not got anything back yet. They’re so slow to respond, I was expecting a same-day reply.

  • 12 Powerpets // Jul 31, 2008 at 2:16 pm

    From the terms of use:

3.2 Scour reserves the right to remove any material and / or to terminate access to the Services without notice for any User that Scour believes is not abiding in good faith by this Agreement, in Scour’s sole discretion and timing.

SCOUR reserves the right to limit, restrict or cancel your Rewards Program enrollment or the Rewards Programs at any time.

And then finally, here’s the line in the Terms of Use for which you were terminated obviously by your own admission since you used a script to gather points:
    ————-
(iii) attempting to earn Rewards Points through unauthorized means such as the use of bots, web rings, intelligent agents, or software designed to mimic the actions of human operation,
    ————

it appears despite your programming skills, you haven’t mastered the RTFM concept, or in this case, RTTOU.

  • 14 Mobile Answers // Aug 1, 2008 at 8:32 pm

Still not contact from Scour, I don’t know what’s going on. Are they being swamped with requests, is there e-mail perpetually unavailable or down - or is this a scam?

At this point I really don’t know, I’ve yet to receive payment or communication from them. I have so far had 1 message reply from them, upon replying to that it has been 3 days without any communication from them.

At this rate I don’t know whether to stop using Scour, or to give them a chance. By this Monday, if I don’t receive a response I will be terminating my usage of this site, and telling my entire referral downline to cease using it, as well as stop promoting the site (remove the links to scour) and issue my advice on this site not being legitimate. Again I’m giving you Scour until Monday - after which I will officially declare this a waste of time and effort.

I want to be fair, and I can understand there are problems. So we’ll see, hopefully the problem(s) are rectified and if not payment, then I hope to at least receive some sort of communication.

  • 15 Smytt // Aug 1, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Sure they know. It’s all the way it should be with all sites that are “legit”. I make my points the way I want (without breaking any rules) then they decide they don’t like my “style of searching” and spit in my face.

Mobile Answers, please be that kind to tell us when you get your card. Until then I’ll try and make sure someone from the staff actually reads this and finds a way to answer straight. Maybe they’re looking for a cool answer now!?

    again - banned. why.

  • 16 Mobile Answers // Aug 2, 2008 at 12:11 am

I’m sorry to say that after referring tons of people, and using Scour legitimately - I too have been banned. My e-mails went without any response, then yesterday I received a message saying I was unbanned - I had never been banned to begin with. So it was odd that they had sent me a message saying I was unbanned.

To make things worse, I send a reply to them hoping to get an explanation and outlining things I saw wrong with the overall system of Scour including the amount of spam comments being posted on the search engine, and a few bugs occurring within the search engine itself. I’ve yet to receive a reply, and as of today I got an e-mail telling me I had been banned.

I feel that I was banned for the message I sent them, in which I raised my concerns about the legitimacy of Scour. I feel as if they banned me as a result of that letter - as I had used Scour legitimately, not using any automation or spam. My comments left were of significant quality, so I am quite sure that without a doubt my usage of Scour was sanctioned.

I’ve replied to Scour asking them for more detail on why I was banned, the standard response of excessive usage makes no sense and holds little weight considering they had checked my account and were willing to pay earlier this week, but only recently have arbitrarily decided to not pay, not communicate with me, and now ban me after I had addressed their slowness in response and lack of transparency in dealing with users.

They don’t send out replies, and they seem to just ignore any form of communication with them which leads me to believe that they are in fact a small one-or-two man organization and quite possibly have no intention of paying users. It is for this reason that I’ve decided to cease using Scour and recommending it until I receive and explanation and/or payment.

I’m on the leaderboard right now and probably have referred the most amount of users to Scour, which will all stop as of today.

  • 18 Smytt // Aug 2, 2008 at 12:15 pm

Welcome to the club, Mobile Answers :) Now do you know what I am talking about? You follow all the rules, you play the game as THEY want. And in the end you find yourself with a finger stuck in “that place”, you know. Sad stuff. Anyway. I see the whole “scour project” dead in a month or two. Remember cashfiesta?

  • 19 TriteLife // Aug 2, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Hey guys, I’m a freelance designer that works on Scour. While I can’t give you any official answers, I’ll do what I can until things get caught up.

The reason the emails are not being responded to promptly is that there’s about 900 feedback emails coming in daily. Not sure how many people actually answer them, but with luck next week I’ll be helping out with it.

Also, the mail server is taking a beating on top of those 900 emails. Scour has become quite popular, and invitations are to thank for that. The downside to this is that the mail server is sending out a whole LOT of emails each day to handle all the invitations. Last I heard there was over 500,000 emails queued to be sent.

For those questioning payment, as I mentioned on Vishwajeet’s blog post, people have been paid. The Scour Team has gift cards ready to be sent out. I can’t really tell you anything about that though, as I honestly don’t know.

For the people who have been banned. My suggestion is to send a feedback email and please give us the team time to respond. You’re really not speeding up the process by making a big deal about it here (sorry, but it’s true). If you were not trying to game the system, then your account will be fixed.

Please understand that the site is new and dealing with a lot of traffic right now. We have hundreds of items on our ‘to do’ list. Hundreds of people are blatantly attempting to cheat.

I apologize for any trouble right now. But please give us some time to catch up with the flow.

  • 20 Eric // Aug 2, 2008 at 2:17 pm

Curious. I would love to hear any positive results from users - anyone else nearing the payout level with mostly referrals?

  • 21 darna mana hai // Aug 2, 2008 at 7:31 pm

guys, after reading all your dreadful comments i am just telling myself “darna mana hai, Getting Scared is Forbidden”. Honestly i spent lot of time on scour for voting and commenting in the hope of getting reward at the end of the day… now i am thinking seriously… should i continue or not? i am also thinking about my friends who are just blindly following me upon my invitation…. chasing my score on scour day and night. hooo! i will not give up i’ll try atleast upto 6500 points then i will decide… give me only your honest opinion please…. thanking you in advance…. hindustani.

  • 22 Powerpets // Aug 3, 2008 at 3:19 am

yup - I have 225 referrals - had just made a small post on our site regarding scour while we’re trying things out.

    My Points: 361
    Friend Points: 5612
    Total Points: 5973

I’m sure if we made it a perm link on the site we could easily get 5000+ referrals in a few weeks. Just trying out the system right now. If all goes well, I’ll be happy to recommend to everyone and perm link it.

  • 23 Powerpets // Aug 3, 2008 at 3:24 am

@Smytt - didn’t see the sarcasm in your post original post, so apologies for the response if you did read the T&C .

  • 24 Powerpets // Aug 3, 2008 at 4:16 am

Perhaps the scour team would be open to a forum based *chat* somewhere, even if it was just with the top 50 or top 100 *leaders* to clear up some of these issues?

Though right now if I were on the scour team, I’d have a look at the influence of the people on the top 50 leader board now. Based on blog responses, it appears many of you have popular sites or blogs of your own. Assuming an average reach of 5000 followers each - that’s a possible quarter million audience they’re affecting right now.

Instead of this banning rule, perhaps look at a big picture, take the loss of a few hundred $ and write out some clear rules and improve the point counting programs.

Either way, I’m looking forward to see how everything turns out, and if things will straighten out for everyone as I do believe scour has tons of potential and a very critical audience right now.

  • 25 Mobile Answers // Aug 3, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Well my last comment has been deliberately left (it remains in moderation while posts made after mine were posted).

Here’s what I wrote (if this manages to make it through):
Well I haven’t given up SMYTT, obviously I can’t vouch for you because I don’t actually know how you used it - so all I can say is based on my own experiences with Scour.

I’ve written a blog on my odd and shocking experience with Scour and Scour support, click my name to read it.

It’s my experience with Scour, starting mostly from the time I requested payment. I’m still trying to resolve this, hopefully amicably - but it’s been rather hard to get in contact with Scour Support - I feel they’re ignoring me as I’ve tried multiple modes of communication with them. I’ve managed to get a bit of attention from them - and hopefully by Monday they’ll reply to me and address my concerns.

I’ve detailed the e-mail exchange I’ve had with Scour Support, and the slightly sketchy nature of this service.

  • 26 Smytt // Aug 3, 2008 at 6:53 pm

    @Powerpets - no harm done.
I’d be happy if at least YOU get some cash.

  • 27 Mobile Answers // Aug 3, 2008 at 11:09 pm

Smytt try reading the blog (click my name to see it), I detailed what they’re doing. Basic summary is they’ appear to be avoiding payment by banning users. I don’t think anyone’s been paid otherwise we’d be hearing them. I’ve pulled my referrals to Scour, until I get a response from them or until I get paid.

2 weeks since they claimed they would pay me.

  • 28 yogesh // Aug 4, 2008 at 10:54 am

the search engine - is good enough to work on it’s own without any incentive and that’s what’s cool about it. There’s a genuine social search engine here which has the potential to put a dent in google’s monopoly

  • 29 Powerpets // Aug 4, 2008 at 8:34 pm

    My Points: 381
    Friend Points: 6231

Email has been sent. Every search, vote and comment completely legit.

    Cross fingers!

I’ve referred lots of my fiends through e-mail invitations. Some of them got registered which helped my points higher & faster.
All users of Scour should invite thier contacts to get easier points like mine.
Happy Searching with Scour!!! Keep searching & inviting your contacts from now.

    Hi Scour Team,

I am still waiting for your response for my reply for the mail I got from scour support saying I have been banned from the scour for excessive uses of user privilege.

I have never used any automated tool for searching, I got my point’s telly to reach to 8000 and when I asked for the CASHOUT I got this mail saying that u are banned from scour.

I just wanted to know where I went wrong.

I have recommended few of my friends to use this search engine and they started using this.

I accept that I was just searching to reach my point to magic figure of 6500/- so that I could check if one can really get the money but unfortunately I got banned when I asked for CASHOUT.

I must say that the search relativity is really good in scour but the speed is not in comparison with the other available engine especially with Google.

One more disadvantage is once you got banned you can’t even use scour for searching because after each search it ask to register yourself.

I am not here to criticise any one or the hard work you guys are putting for this search engine, I am just advising that its irritating to close the register window after each search.

It seems you can’t keep track of search for more than 250 characters. So please look at this too.

I hope I will get the response from scour some day :-)
    Till then n-joy

    Hi Scour Team,

I am trying to get in touch with scour support from last one week, After around 9-10 attmepts it seems that they have either very small team to reply to or there is some problem with the email address provided so the email is not reaching to them.

I hope some of scour team member will read this blog and would reply to me.

Is there any time line by which we could expect a reply i know it would be hard on your side to reply so many mails but atleast a auto reply would be good enough to indicate that our mail has reached ur inbox :-)
    Looking forward for some reply..

    Hi all.
I have been using Scour for 20 days.
I really liked it coz I usually got the required results easily. I have always been following the guidelines for avoiding Abuse.
All my searches and comments so far have been genuine only. In spite of that, I found today morning that my scour points are not at all increasing on new searches.
What could be the reason for this? Can anyone help me know the issue?

    Thanks.

  • 42 Nuc // Aug 12, 2008 at 6:04 pm

Does anyone know? It seems the limit includes your referrals points also? My points do not go up even when they earn more, because I had apparently already hit my daily limit. Is the only benefit of getting a bonus for inviting them? I believe I received a bonus when I used the “invite friends” link, but only one person signed up using it. For the others, I did not get anything when the actually signed up, because I personally gave them the referral link .

Just confused on the whole point system, and there does not seem to be an easy to follow guide for it. Of course, I just could be missing it!

hi, i am from India, what is this banning all about? I dont get the point, can anyone explain why people are banned?
And about Scour, a good actually great search engine, except for its search speed. But sure better than all other search engines i have used, i am able to find what i want with ease and also comment on them for future use and voting part is toooo good.
All the best for the growth of the Scour in a big level.
